Bluebonnets in Texas

One of my favorite things about Texas is the state flower: the bluebonnet.

In the springtime, wild bluebonnets will begin to pop up everywhere on the sides of roads, especially along highways. You will see people parking on the sides of roads, wrangling their kids to capture family photos with the bluebonnets. They're beautiful and just pop when you photograph them!

I captured this one above on a road trip in 2013 before we moved overseas. I just couldn't resist myself and had to get my husband to pull over the car. :) Sometimes you gotta do, what you gotta do!

For you more techy people out there who are curious, I shot this on my Canon 5D Mark II, likely with my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. This was the lens I used almost exclusively for a while before I switched to Primes. It's a great lens and would totally buy one again!

Hope you're weekend is awesome!

When we were driving through Texas visiting our family and friends, we stopped in Austin, Texas and saw Joshua's Uncle and Aunt. They took us to this fun Mexican restaurant that was overlooking what you see above(!!). We got to watch the sun set as we caught up on life and ate a delicious dinner. It was pretty amazing. I felt so thankful in that moment to be with them and to see God's handiwork.

Currently, we're in Houston spending time with Joshua's grandparents and will soon switch to my parents. I can't believe that it's already June 9th--time is whizzing by so quickly! It reminds me that the time we have in our lives is so limited. It's so important that we do the most excellent things with the time we're given. We don't know when our lives will end. I don't know about you, but I still have a lot to do with my life! :)

Live today to its fullest!

Different Every Time

I love taking pictures of fire because you can never get the same shot!

Especially when you vary the settings. These two (above) have different aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings. You can see in the first one, the shutter speed is very slow. I didn't have a tripod, so I held it as still as I possibly could and it came out. If I had my tripod with me at that time, I would have experimented more with slow shutter speeds. Next time.

I like to experiment and try to push the limits on my knowledge and camera. Speaking of experimenting, I am very excited about some things coming from Amazon to my home in the next couple of days. For my recent birthday, some of my family gave me cash as a gift and I was able to purchase some lighting equipment! It's just the basics, but I'm super excited to play with it all soon.

Unfortunately, I didn't have enough money to buy everything I wanted, but I was looking online and there are many DIY projects that I can try out (i.e. DIY Softboxes). If I try it out, I'll let you know how it goes!

Dogs Are so Much Fun!

If Joshua had his way, we'd probably have a good looking dog like this one below.

This is Berkeley. She is fun dog who doesn't like her picture taken. Every time I took out the camera she hid her face! I managed to catch her one time though. :)

We love dogs. They bring so much joy and life. As I was saying above, Joshua wants a dog so bad, but with how our lives are it would be really cruel to our pet. With traveling a lot and living in different places, it just isn't feasible. Maybe one day we will, but at this point it's not happening.

The way Joshua gets around this, is that we play with our friend's dogs! So if any of you have a dog that you need walked or played with, Joshua is your man!

What about you? Do you like dogs? What kinds? We prefer larger dogs that have energy and like to play. They are just so much fun!

Happy Monday!

Meet Buck! | Portrait Project

Right away when I met Buck, I knew I was meeting a man who had a servants heart that was full of love. 68 and going strong, this man has a farm in the middle of nowhere in Texas that he loves to be on. We had the privilege with some good friends of ours to go out and spend the weekend with him. We had such a good time!

Buck worked a long time in the corporate world, but always wanted to have a farm in the country. While he normally resides in the Houston area with his family, he takes every chance he can to go work on his farm. He currently has around 100 acres of land where he's built a lake, a garden and currently uses the land to produce and sell hay. He loves it! He told me, that if he could, he would spend all of his time there. I think from the picture above, you can see how true it is!

One thing that really encouraged me about Buck's story, is that he had a dream of owning land and for the last 13 years he's done it! I hope the things I want to do in my life also pan out--even if I'm in my 60s!

Thanks for stopping by! Want your picture on my blog? Email me (ashley@transparentlifephotos.com) or leave a comment below!

Spring is here! These flowers were popping up everywhere. I could probably spend a lot of time taking pictures of flowers. They're colorful, pretty and all look so different. God is so creative!

I took this picture from this past weekend. We were in the country somewhere in Texas (close to Centerville, I think) with some friends of ours. It was fun to get away from the city and to slow down. However...I've learned pretty quickly that I am not a country gal. I just love the city too much!

Hope your Tuesday is going well!

Nathan & Allison | Maternity Portrait

This shoot was fun! I haven't done a maternity portrait in years, actually, and I had such a fun photographing these two. Meet my younger sister, Allison, who is due April 14th with her first son, Zachary. I can't wait to meet him!

It was very hard for me to choose these photos, so I'm sharing a lot today. :) ENJOY!

My Mom was the "Prop Queen" at this shoot. She kept handing us things to photograph with Allison's tummy. It made this shoot so interesting and fun though--so good job Mom! Thanks!

Allison really likes to smile and laugh. It was fun photographing that quality of hers. :)

I really like Nathan. He has a kind heart that cares deeply. That's one of the first things I saw when I met him the first time. Allison has a keeper!

Love the lines in this above picture! And the lens glare! The sun was so beautiful that day!

I just LOVE the colors in the above photo!

Congrats Nathan and Allison! Love you both a ton!

Overtaken by Green

Have you ever tried to challenge yourself by choosing a color to focus on while you shoot? If your color was green, this would have been a great find.

I took these pictures in Houston, Texas, USA while on a photo walk with my mom and sister. It was a lot of fun--we took too many pictures and had a good time doing it. I love the brightness of the green and the texture of the leaves.

As I've said in other posts, on photo walks, focusing on a particular color, shape or line will help your eyes see things that they normally wouldn't. Try it--it'll be fun as you hunt. You could even make it a competition among your other photographer friends.

I think I like the first photo more, but there is something about the second one that catches my eyes. So I decided to post both. :) Good thing I'm in charge of the rules, eh?

Hope that your day is full of color and brightness like these photos!
