Where Have I Been?

Well hello there! After almost 10 months of not posting on this blog, I have decided to begin posting daily again. I have so much to share about my project and where I'm headed as a photographer.

First off, what am I up to these days? Well, I'm no longer in South Asia, but the Middle East! We have shifted due to some opportunities Joshua has found business-wise and with my online MA I don't have to be in one specific place, so we moved. This has been a very recent change (we only moved 12 days ago!) and we're still adjusting, settling in, and trying to figure out this new country and culture. To be honest though, I feel like once you've lived in South Asia you're about ready for anything. ;)

My project on fatherhood has progressed incredibly since my last post in January. I'll be posting some of the photo shoots on here in the coming days and look forward to sharing these with you. I'd love to get your feedback on my project and the trajectory it is heading in.

I also will continue posting images from our travels--we traveled a lot this year and I have much to share! Alongside this, I have much to share about what I'm learning in my MA on this blog. I have grown so much as a photographer and storyteller this year and I want to invite you into my findings.

So, much is ahead, friend, so keep on the lookout about what's going on! I'll leave you with this image from one of my more recent photoshoots from my project on fatherhood.

I'll explain more about the direction of the project in the coming days, but feel free to follow the project's Instagram feed in the meantime!

Emily | Baby Portrait

If you've been following me lately, you will notice most of my pictures are travel oriented. Back in the day (about 5-6 years ago) I was primarily doing lifestyle portraits, which included families, babies, engagements, etc. It was a fun and exciting time that really set me up well for where I'm at today.

So when my friend, Mary Kathryn, approached me about doing her baby's portrait, I jumped on the chance. To be completely honest, I was a little nervous since I hadn't done one of these in so long! However, despite my nervousness I feel like these turned out well!

Thanks Mary Kathryn, for giving me the opportunity to take pictures of your beautiful daughter!

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look. Feel free to leave a comment and say hi! I love meeting my readers!

Sleeping Baby

Meet my cousin, Nikko. This kid just turned one year old and had a really fun party--a smorgasbord of Italian food, a face painter, good company, beautiful weather and lots of rambunctious kids--what could I not like about that?! It was amazing to see Nikko dig into his cake and smear blue frosting all over his face, arms, legs, etc. :) I don't have any pictures of those because I actually didn't bring my camera that day! Weird, right? Well, it's fortunate enough that I was able to go as I had just gotten out of the hospital a few days before. I mostly sat at that party!

I took the above picture in mid-June and it's amazing to see how different a baby looks after only 6 months! They grow so much. He looks so little in these photos.

So I have been looking at the results from my survey so far and it seems like you guys want to hear stories about people! Fun! If you think differently or the same, go on my poll and vote! Click here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BQDB9B7  I want to hear from you! Don't wait! (If you want to view the descriptions of these projects, click here)

I hope that you have had a good week so far!

Family, Family, Family!

I'm going to take a break from my normal photo of the day (POTD) and post something that happened towards the end of last year--a family portrait! I actually did three of these and never have gotten around to posting them. I guess that tells you how busy I am!

I have known this family prior to their kiddos and they are awesome people. We just love them and are so excited to see their family grow. I did pictures for them once in the past and you can see those here!

It's amazing to see how much their kids have grown--their middle child was a baby when we last did pictures!

One thing I do love about this family is their willingness to try things, even if it feels silly. In our last shoot we got a jumping picture and we followed suit in this one. :) I love that their kids got into it, too!

This was a nice change from the normal posts. Maybe I'll post the other two family portraits I've recently done soon. :)

Cute Babies & Project Ideas

I currently have three shoots that I have done that I need to post! I have been so busy that even posting one picture a day has been a stretch (yet, I have done it)! This is one from a shoot I did back in September. Such an awesome family (and they have a really cute baby!)!

Also, now that the photo exhibition is done...I feel like I need to do another project. I have two brewing around in my mind.

1. Break the Rules: This project would actually focus on breaking the rules of photography to just create artwork without caring what others think. :) So that might include (but is not limited to) out of focus photos, strange positioning of subjects, etc.! Not sure all what it means yet, but I'm thinking for the new year this might be my project.

2. Shooting in the Raw: I feel like now-a-days photos are photoshopped WAY too much! What is real anymore? Yes, sometimes photoshopping really adds to the photo, but what happened to learning your camera well to produce excellent photos? I want to grow in this area, so I've had the idea of taking photos....and not editing them. *gulp* AT ALL. I'm a little nervous about this one. It'll take some stretching on my part to show you work without edits. However, I want to prove that good pictures don't have to have editing.

What do you think? Which project do you like? Tell me! Vote here (and like my page while you're at it if you haven't already!)!

Kids + Photo Shoot = A Tired Photographer :)

If any of you has a kid, has taken pictures of kids, been around a kid, have seen a kid somewhere, etc. :) you know how much energy they have! When I take pictures of kids, I have to wear the right shoes to run around and try to get that moment of them having fun. Let's face it - taking pictures can be a strange thing for anyone, and for a kid it can be intimidating. Therefore, the photographer has to give a lot of energy in making them laugh, you have to run around as they play and just have fun with them. By the end of a shoot - you just want to sleep. :)

I did a fun photo shoot of a family a month back and haven't had the chance to post the pictures! This is one of them and I just happened to catch him at the right time! He didn't want his picture taken that day (I have lots of pouty faces from him :), but I got him with a small smile! :) I counted this a victory.

Taking pictures of children is a lot of work, but it's a lot of fun and worth it.

Bekah | A Senior/Family Shoot!

A little over a week ago while in Dallas I was able to meet up with a wonderful family to do a senior shoot and a few family shots. I met Bekah's Mom whenever I went through Celebrate Recovery at our church. Since I was going to be in Dallas for a week, she contacted me and we were able to work it out for me to do Bekah's Senior pictures! We had tons of fun! This family is wonderful. I really also enjoyed being with Bekah - she is a sweetheart! She has a beautiful smile and heart--I really enjoyed getting to know her the few hours I was with her. Hopefully these pictures will reflect the beauty I saw in her!

We started in Prairie Creek Park and ended up in Deep Ellum. Time for pictures!

Karpeles Family | Family Portrait Time!

Over two years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting the Karpeles family in Arizona. We had just moved there and were in need of some friends! Unfortunately for us, they actually moved short after our move to Chicago! That just meant that we now had friends in another place in the States (and now we had a reason to go there!).

This family is so wonderful! It was such a joy to be able to spend the weekend with them. We decided to take some pictures in a familiar area to them in Chicago. We all had such a great time.

Karpeles Family - I hope you guys enjoy these! Love you guys!

This little girl was so shy at first! Fortunately, she warmed up pretty quick. Even though she's not smiling in this photo she is so adorable!! Love the colors.

Jumping time!! :)

So the Karpeles wanted a background that seemed normal to them, so they suggested their local grocery store. Why not? I had never shot in a grocery store before! It was much fun and I think it added so much uniqueness to their photos. I love these next few.

So we wanted to get some shots walking across the street. I think we did it about three times. If anyone was watching us they probably thought we were crazy. Nonetheless, I think we got some good shots! Especially the next one! :)

We got the taxi! Yeah! I was so happy about this one. So great.
